The PlayStation controller is getting one of the most significant redesigns we’ve ever seen with the arrival of the PS5, which is finally here. Thanks to cutting-edge haptic feedback, adjustable triggers, and built-in noises, the new DualSense controller is made to give maximum immersion. This allows you to feel and hear your favourite games like never before.
But given that the DualShock 4 from the PS4 is widely regarded as one of the best controllers ever built and will still be compatible with PS5 for some games, it has some huge shoes to fill. Read on for a detailed explanation of what’s new with the DualSense vs. DualShock 4 and how you’ll be able to use the two controllers on Sony’s upcoming system if you’re interested.

PS5 DualSense vs DualShock 4: Price
The cost of next-generation capabilities is high. Priced at $69.99, the DualSense Wireless Controller is slightly more expensive than the DualShock 4 ($64.99 MSRP). Keep a look out for Black Friday PS5 discounts, as the latter controller is frequently put on cheap.
Naturally, each of these controllers comes with its corresponding console, thus PS5 users will immediately receive one DualSense.
PS5 DualSense vs DualShock: Design and feel

The PS5 console isn’t the only new Sony device that makes a significant impression. The DualSense has a more substantial grip and is noticeably more substantial than the DualShock 4, making it remind one of the Xbox Wireless Controller. Although the DualSense weighs 9.9 ounces as opposed to the DualShock 4’s 7.4 ounces, the size difference is immediately apparent.
After using the DualSense for a few days, I’m still unsure of which controller feels better to me. The PS5 gamepad has a pleasing weight to it, but I’m interested to see if it causes any hand cramping during long sessions of Mortal Kombat or Call of Duty. Comparing the DualShock 4 to its new sister, the DualShock 4 still feels incredibly ergonomic and incredibly small.
But these controllers don’t just feel different; they also look very differently from one another. The DualSense boasts a striking two-tone design with white translucent buttons and a black internal area, in contrast to typical DualShock 4 variations that are made of a single hue.
The DualSense features a much larger touchpad surface, but the button layout is virtually the same. Additionally, the DualSense incorporates clever back grips that are made up of a number of tiny symbols that correspond to the four PlayStation face buttons (Circle, cross, square and triangle).
The light bar on the DualSense is now emitted from the front touchpad, making it significantly more noticeable than the DualShock 4’s top-facing light. It’s also important to note that the DualShock 4 still uses the outdated micro-USB charging protocol, whereas the DualSense has switched to USB-C.
PS5 DualSense vs DualShock 4: Features
The DualSense’s adjustable triggers and powerful haptics, which combine to produce a more immersive sensation of feedback than any other controller, are its main selling points. In Astro’s Playroom, for instance, you can experience the realistic rattling of sand as you walk through a desert storm or more resistance when pulling the triggers to launch a spring-loaded character. Sony’s controller can give some of the most advanced feedback we’ve ever felt on a gamepad, even when compared to the Switch’s 3D rumble. We still need to try DualSense on more games.
Many functions are still shared by the DualSense and DualShock 4, such as a built-in speaker, support for motion control, and a touchpad for navigating menus and games. With the built-in microphone of the DualSense, you may communicate with pals while playing games and even carry out some in-game tasks, such blowing into the microphone to advance a platform in Astro’s Playroom.
PS5 DualSense vs DualShock 4: Compatibility
The PS5 DualSense controller is obviously made exclusively for the PS5, but initial reports indicate that you’ll be able to use it on PC and Android as well (we’ll be testing this claim soon). DualSense won’t work with the PlayStation 4 (PS4).
Comparatively speaking, the DualShock 4 is more adaptable because it works with PS4, PS3, PC, Mac, Android, and even iOS. It will also function on the PS5, but only when you are using PS4 games that are backwards compatible. As a result, when it comes time to stock up on extra controllers, keep in mind the kinds of local multiplayer games you’ll be playing on the PS5.
PS5 DualSense vs DualShock 4: Outlook
Our first testing suggests that the DualSense will be a significant improvement over the DualShock 4, thanks to its immersive haptic feedback and adjustable triggers that produce games that genuinely seem next-generation. Although players with small hands might find it challenging to get used to the new controller, its bulkier design feels wonderful.
Stay tuned for our more thorough tests if you’re a non-PlayStation gamer wondering which of these gamepads gives the superior experience for PC and mobile. But if you’ve already pre-ordered a PS5, you can look forward to a tonne of intriguing new controller functions on the DualSense.
