How To Turn Off the PS5 Controller
There are two simple ways to turn off your PS5 controller:
Using the PS Button:
-
- Hold down the big PlayStation button in the middle of the controller for about 5-10 seconds.
- The light on the controller will slowly fade away, showing that it’s off.
Using the Quick Settings Menu:
-
- Press the PlayStation button once to open the quick settings.
- Scroll down and choose “Accessories”.
- Pick “Wireless Controller” and select “Turn Off”.
Note:
- If your PS5 is on standby, the controller will turn off on its own after a while of not being used. You can change how long it takes in Settings > System > Power Saving > Set Time Until Controller Turns Off.
- You can also mute the controller’s microphone by pressing the mute button at the top.
Even when used with a PC, you can turn off your PS5 controller in the same way you would on a PS5 console:
How To Turn Off the PS5 Controller On PC
Using the PS Button:
- Press and hold the PlayStation button (the large button with the PS logo) on the center of the controller for 5-10 seconds.
- The light bar on the controller will gradually fade and turn off, indicating the controller is powered down.
There is no additional step needed specifically because you’re using it with a PC. As long as the controller is connected wirelessly via Bluetooth or wired via a USB cable, holding the PS button for the designated time will turn it off regardless of the device it’s connected to.
How To Turn Off PS5 Controller Without Console
There are two easy ways to turn off your PS5 controller without needing the console itself:
Using the PS Button:
This is the quickest and most common method. Simply press and hold the PlayStation button (the large button with the PS logo) in the center of the controller for 5-10 seconds. The light bar on the controller will gradually fade and turn off, indicating the controller is powered down.
Using the Quick Settings Menu (if connected to another device):
This method works if your controller is connected to a PC or another device via Bluetooth or USB cable. The specific steps might vary depending on the device you’re using.
In general, you’ll need to access the device’s settings and look for options related to connected Bluetooth devices or USB peripherals. Once you locate the PS5 controller in the list of devices, you should find an option to “disconnect” or “turn off” the controller.
Notes:
If your PS5 is in rest mode, the controller will automatically turn off after a set period of inactivity. You can adjust this setting on the PS5 console itself by going to Settings > System > Power Saving > Set Time Until Controller Turns Off.
Regardless of the method used, remember that holding the PS button for 5-10 seconds is the universal way to turn off your PS5 controller, whether connected to the console, PC, or another device.
How To Turn Off Mic On PS5 Controller
Here are two ways to turn off the microphone on your PS5 controller:
Using the Mute Button:
- Locate the mute button on the top of the controller, next to the headphone jack.
- Press the mute button once.
- The microphone icon on the controller will light up orange, indicating that the microphone is muted.
Using the Quick Settings Menu:
- Press the PlayStation button on the center of the controller once to open the quick settings menu.
- Scroll down and select “Sound”.
- Select “Microphone”.
- Choose “Mute”.
Notes:
You can also check if the microphone is muted by looking at the microphone icon on the controller. If it’s orange, the microphone is muted.
- Muting the microphone only disables voice chat. You can still hear other players if their microphones are on.
- To unmute the microphone, simply press the mute button again or select “Unmute” in the quick settings menu.
- While not directly related to turning off the microphone, you can also adjust the microphone volume through the quick settings menu. Follow the steps above to access the “Microphone” settings and then use the slider to adjust the volume to your preference.
How To Turn Off Speakers On PS5 Controller
The PS5 controller doesn’t have a dedicated way to completely turn off the speakers. However, there are a couple of workarounds to effectively silence them:
Mute the Controller:
This is the most straightforward approach. Press the mute button located on the top of the controller, next to the headphone jack. This mutes both the microphone and the speakers.
Adjust Controller Volume:
While not an “off” switch, you can significantly reduce the speaker volume to the point where it’s practically silent.
- Press the PlayStation button on the center of the controller once to open the quick settings menu.
- Scroll down and select “Sound”. You’ll see a slider labeled “Controller Volume”.
- Slide the bar all the way to the left to minimize the volume. This effectively mutes the speakers without needing the mute button.
Notes:
- Muting the controller or adjusting the volume only affects the controller’s speakers. It won’t mute the audio coming through your TV or headphones.
- If you’re using headphones, the controller speakers will be automatically disabled.
While these workarounds effectively silence the controller speakers, it’s important to note that there isn’t a dedicated “off” switch for them. However, the methods mentioned above provide convenient ways to mute the speakers or reduce their volume to a negligible level.
