How To Fix PS5 Controller D-Pad Not Working

There are a few reasons why your PS5 controller’s D-pad might not be working properly, and the fix will depend on the specific issue. Here are some common problems and potential solutions:

Possible reasons:

  • Dirt and debris: Dust, dirt, and other debris can get lodged under the D-pad buttons, preventing them from making proper contact.
  • Software glitch: Sometimes a temporary software issue can cause the D-pad to malfunction.
  • Hardware damage: In rare cases, the D-pad itself or the circuit board it’s connected to could be physically damaged.

Here are some things you can try to fix the D-pad:

Simple fixes:

  • Clean the D-pad: Use a compressed air can to gently blow out any dust or debris that might be trapped under the buttons. You can also try using a cotton swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol to clean the buttons themselves. Be careful not to get any liquid inside the controller.
  • Restart the PS5: Sometimes a simple restart can clear up software glitches.
  • Update the controller software: Make sure your controller software is up to date. You can check for updates by going to Settings > System > Software Update > Update Controller Software.

More advanced fixes:

  • Reset the controller: Try resetting the controller to its factory settings. You can do this by pressing and holding the Share button and the PS button simultaneously for 5 seconds, until the light bar flashes white.
  • Open the controller (not recommended unless you’re comfortable with electronics): If the above solutions don’t work, you might need to open the controller and clean the D-pad contacts or replace the D-pad itself. However, this is not recommended unless you’re comfortable with electronics, as you could damage the controller if you’re not careful. There are many online tutorials and guides available that can help you with this, but proceed with caution.

If none of these solutions work, it’s possible that your controller is damaged and needs to be repaired or replaced. You can contact PlayStation support for more help.

Experience #5

I just repaired my D-pad’s up button. It was stuck due to dust or dog hair. I accessed the controller by unscrewing the two screws beneath the black piece near the handles or legs of the controller, as well as the two screws under L1 and R1. After separating the controller, I removed the final screw located above the left vibrator. This enabled me to slightly separate the chipboard from the rubber seat of the buttons, allowing me to use an air duster to clean out the debris.

Experience #6

I can’t believe it! It worked! Brute force is the solution. Hit it hard with my hand palm on the left side 3 times and it worked.
